Disaster Preparedness for the Furred and Feathered

Disaster preparedness for pets is a must for any pet owner who is concerned about the survival of their family during and after a disaster.  They need to remember the one member of the family that is the most helpless: the family pet.  Just as we would make special preparations for an infant, who is helpless and unable to communicate, we must do the same for those furred and feathered babies entrusted to our care.

One of the things recommended for survival preparedness is the disaster preparedness kit or 72-hour survival kit, often called a “bug out bag” or “go bag”.  Following that example, there are now disaster preparedness kits for pets that provide food, water, shelter and first aid.

These come in different sizes, and are often designed especially for either dogs or cats.  These are excellent kits to have in the closet or garage ready to pick up and toss in the car in the event of an evacuation ahead of a storm or other disaster.

Here’s a brief list of items commonly included in these pet disaster survival kits so that you can actually create your own pet go bag out of items you may already have or can pick up at your local discount or dollar store.

Pet Disaster Survival Kit Ingredients:

2   Food
12 Water
2   Blanket
2   Lightsticks
2   Bowls
1   50’ Rope
1   Collar
1   Leash
6   Poop bags
3   Chew sticks
1   Can Opener
1   First Aid Kit
1   Pet’s Individual Information
1   3-gal plastic bucket with lid

These kits can range in price from $40 to $80 dollars.  These are ready to go and convenient. However, if you have the time, you can also create your own pet disaster kit geared specifically towards your own particular pet.

When I decided to create a disaster survival kit for my dog, I decided to use one of those black diaper bags provided by baby formula companies and given to new mothers by hospitals. I had several that I had picked up at garage sales for about a buck each.

I then headed to the dollar store with a list of the items I wanted to include in my dog’s go bag.  There, for under $10 I purchased:

Packets of moist dog food
3 1-litre bottles of water
Flashlight & batteries
Rope
Chew sticks
Can Opener
First Aid Kit

From home, I added:

Bowls
Collar
Leash
Poop bags (folded plastic shopping bags, vacuum seal in a vac bag)

Since I have a small dog, I substituted two old towels for the two blankets.

For less than $20 all together I created a complete disaster survival kit for my dog.  All it took was a little time and a little money.  However, if you don’t have the time or inclination to do it yourself, go ahead and purchase one of those ready-made pet disaster survival kits.  The most important thing is not the money but that you do what is necessary to ensure the safety of your pet.

By the way, while you're preparing for your pets survival, don't forget to create your own survival kit.

How do I move a robin's nest that has babies in it? The babies have feather's and eyes open.?

The nest is on the tongue of our 5th wheel and we need to move the 5th wheel in about 3 days as we are going camping.

Is ther a tree or scrub very close to the original nest location. If you move it only slightly the parents should still be able to hear the begging calls of the chicks and still be able to find the nest. You should do it now so that you can observe from afar to see if the adults are able to find the new location. If for some reason they are unable to find where you moved it, you need to get the chicks to a local wildlife rehab.

The Ravens include: Jimmy Ricks (vocals).Recorded between 1946 & 1952.This two-CD set from Proper -- the U.K. company that's been issuing multi-disc sets from a brace of American stars -- covers all of the Ravens' sides from 1946 through 1952, starting with the Hub label, prior to the arrival of tenor Maithe Marshall in the group's line-up. Those sides encompass some of the most subtle and sophisticated examples of R&B harmony vocals of their era ("My Sugar Is So Refined," "Out Of A Dream") and stirring rhythm numbers as well -- it's easy to understand, hearing these tracks nearly 60 years later, why the group was considered such a hot performing property at the time; they were nearly ten years ahead of their time on songs like "Bye Bye Baby Blues." Those sides come from noisier but brighter sources than the National (and King) sides that follow immediately afterward, but the music is so powerful, that the performances lose none of their luster. And the second disc, opening with "Oh Babe," and "Walkin' With The Blues" from 1950, featuring the Ravens' Jimmy Ricks fronting the Benny Goodman Sextet (and sharing the spotlight with Nancy Reed), is worth the price of admission just for those tracks -- which, incidentally, sound state-of-the-art and make one wonder what Proper is doing with Columbia's early-50's sides that Columbia isn't. The other Columbia sides, alas, show the Ravens moving just a little too far into a pop vein, and the group doesn't get back to a pure R&B sound until they join Mercury Records, the period which closes out this compilation. The audio quality is close to state-of-the-art throughout, limited only by the condition of the original source materials, and the annotation is one of the most thorough accounts of the group, their music, and their era that one can buy. ~ Bruce Eder

Baby Food Allergies – All you Need to Know

In recent year we have seen an increase in the susceptibility of allergies. Baby food allergies are of particular concern as the source may be difficult to detect.

Baby food allergies are as common as adult food allergies.

If your baby appears distressed for no apparent reason or has unexplained areas of itchiness to the skin, then perhaps he or she has a baby food allergy.

What is an Allergy?

An allergy can be defined as an intolerance to a particular substance when touched, inhaled, injected or ingested.

When our body is exposed to a substance that causes an allergic reaction the response may be nasal or respiratory congestion, itchy or runny nose, watery eyes, diarrhea, or itchy rashes anywhere on the body.

Baby Food Allergies – Can My Allergies be Passed on to my Baby?

If you tend to have an allergic reaction then your baby may have a tendency to be allergic also.

However you and your baby may not share the same food allergies or be allergic to the same substances.

You may have asthma, while your child may develop hay fever.

Baby Food Allergies – How to detect them

It can sometimes be difficult detecting the cause of baby food allergies. If you think your infant has a baby food allergy, eliminating the following products from their diet may help.

• Milk and dairy products

• Eggs

• Nuts

• Shellfish

• Citrus Fruits

Once you have eliminated each of these food groups from your baby’s diet, you can begin to reintroduce them gradually one by one.

Wait a few days before the introduction of an additional food group and do not mix food groups.

If your baby has a baby food allergy you be able to detect it by monitoring his or her reaction to the introduction of these individual food groups.

Baby Food Allergies – Can they be prevented?

Breastfeeding your baby for the first six months of his or her life helps to reduce the incidence of allergies earlier on in life.

Try to avoid giving your baby pre-prepared foods that contain additives, or tinned or packaged foods.

Baby Food Allergies – When are they Most Likely to Occur?

Baby food allergies can occur at any time. Many babies are allergic to, or have an intolerance to cows milk and your baby may develop an allergy to other milk or wheat products, shellfish, nuts or citrus fruits.

If your baby has an allergic reaction after eating a particular food, you should see the signs within an hour.

Baby Food Allergy – Signs to Look For

The symptoms of a baby food allergy could include swelling or itchiness of the lips or tongue, wheezing or a skin rash.

Some babies may develop an intolerance to particular food groups.

If your baby has a food intolerance, symptoms might include diarrhea, vomiting, stomach pain, colic or wind.

Treating Baby Food Allergies

As long as you can find the cause, then the best way to treat a baby food allergy is to refrain from giving your baby that particular food.

If your baby is experiencing related symptoms then the allergy could be pollen related rather than a baby food allergy. Non food substances that could also cause an allergic reaction include pet hairs, tobacco smoke, feather pillows, perfume or dust mites.

Baby Food Allergies – Healthy Alternatives

If your results indicated that your infant is experiencing baby food allergies, here are some non allergic foods that you can try introducing into their diet.

• Mangoes, apples, grapes

• Barley, oats, rye

• Cauliflower, carrots, sweet potatoes

• Chicken, salmon

If in any doubt you should seek professional help to determine whether it is a baby food allergy or something more serious.

Baby food allergies are quote common and with a little work are fairly easy to detect. Once you have detected the source of your baby’s food allergy, the simplest way to eliminate the symptoms is to remove the cause.
