Classing It Up with a Candle Holder

A candle holder can make or break a household. And I do not mean that statement lightly either. If you are living in your own home or apartment and aren't subject to the decoration whims of something else, then deciding what kind of candle holder to get could be just as serious as deciding what colour to paint your walls or whether you're going to get a cat or a dog. It is a big deal, make no mistake. You cannot get something that is going to be too kitschy or something that it going to be too overt.

 

The accessories like this that are small, that make the biggest impressions must go with the theme of the rest of your home without superseding any of the themes you already have in place. However, to choose not to get one is not an option.

 

You may be reading this and thinking that you don't need to get a candle holder if you don't have candles. Well I have news for you, which only mean that it's time for you to get some candles. You need to have a fully equipped household and candles come under that category as well. You may still be sceptical, but so was I. Just a few weeks ago I was in a home shopping store looking for some home supplies with a couple of friends and they kept steering me to the candles section telling me that I needed to get candles in order to have a complete household. I brushed them off and left the store without getting any. Then what do you know, later that week we got a power outage and I was sitting there in the dark. I couldn't even find a flash light because I had no idea where they were and it was too dark to find them. Everyone knows where a stove is though and all it takes is the heat from a stove top to light up a match and then you're set to find a candle and light it up for some light.

 

They tried to tell me how important it was to have candles, and I ignored them and ended up paying for it in the end. Well you can be sure that the next day I went out to the store to find a few candles that went with my wall paper and my paint job, and then I went and got a candle holder set which fully complemented the candles I bought and the house over all. This is something that you can't ignore. It is something that you really need to pay attention to because it can be one of the most important visual aspects of a household.

 

The candle is not an extinct relic of a bygone age. It is true that with electric light we no longer need them as much as we did a long time ago, or before the invention of electricity, but because of how integral they were to the household in the olden times, they are still an important element of our culture. Because of this they need to be preserved and having a candle stick holder set around is a perfect way of keeping the candle relevant.

White Balancing with a Flash Filter

If you take a look at the shot below, you will see the warm but very ugly and disconcerting orange lit area in the right background. The shot is indoors in a hotel under tungsten lighting and the flash is on the weak side, and the far walls in the background are some distance away.

The solution is to balance the color temperature at the back to the front. To do this we have to balance the camera white balance and the flash output color to the background, since we have control over those elements of the shot. We need a filter to attach to the lens of the flash unit, and NOT the camera. The white balance setting in the camera can be changed. I use Rosco filters, and for the tungsten issue we use a standard CTO filter. If the lights were fluorescent then we would choose the appropriate greenish filter. Of course, once balanced, you can tweak the camera setting to warm up the shot if required.

Follow the technique described to keep balanced light in the shot.

Take the following steps:

• Set the white balance of the camera to 3200K or the tungsten (incandescent) light setting.
• Attach a Rosco cto filter to the front of the flash (speedlight) lens using a perspex holder (pic below)
• Shoot

Below is an image of a perspex holder that can attach to the flash unit using velcro.

You can purchase the perspex filter holder at comprehensive camera shop that stocks the Rosco filters. Velcro is supplied with the holder.

Make any final white balance adjustments in your image editor, but the balance through the shot should be spot on.
