pop-up flash as a master flash.?
is it possible to use the pop-up flash as a master and the 580 EX II as a slave? i saw these features in one of david tejadas photography session.
i have a canon 40D & 580 EX II. can somebody teach me how to set it up? thanks.
I'll tell you what I have. I have a Rebel XS 1000d and 2 slave flash units. I place the slaves (these have the white bulb on top so they see the master) on tripods as "out riggers" to my right and left or where ever I need them.
I make sure the slaves are slightly in front of the camera so they're sure to see my "master" which is the pop up flash on the camera.
Here's one thing to consider though and this is going to sound strange but it's the way it works on two of my cameras, a Fuji 9000 and my Canon.
In order to use slaves you must set your pop up on red eye. If I try to use full auto the Canon pops the flash a couple of times to establish focus - that triggers the slaves. So, if I use my manual settings and set my shutter to 1/200 and my aperture to about f/4 (in a darker situation) with the flash on red eye it works. Understand though in this situation I must use slaves that have settings to ignore the first flash of the red eye setting (there's two flashes).
This sounds complicated but once you understand it and have used it a few times it's really simple.
I don't know if you'll run into this or not but it took me quite a bit of experimenting to figure this out - now I just set it up and wala!
