Scratched Xbox 360 Discs and Laser Burn

The Xbox 360 games console has developed a bad reputation for damaging game discs when the machine is moved or subjected to strong vibrations when it is switched on. In this article we take a look at what effect this has on your Xbox 360 game disc and what can be done to repair it if it becomes damaged in this way.

How Do Xbox 360 Discs Become Damaged?

There are several ways your Xbox 360 game disc can become damaged. Firstly, most discs develop light surface marks overtime when they are repeatedly taken in and out of a game case. This type of damage very rarely causes any playback problems.

Secondly, if a game is not properly cared for then it may develop heavier scratches, some of which may even prevent the disc from playing. What Is Laser Burn?

The term ‘laser burn' is actually very misleading. If you knock over your Xbox 360 console while playinga game, your laser doesn't actually ‘burn' the disc. Instead the lens of your laser comes into physical contact with the disc as it is spinning and creates a circular scratch around the entire disc. Therefore the damage caused is actually a radial or circular scratch rather than genuine laser burn which is completely different.

Can Scratched Discs Be Repaired?

Yes. Xbox 360 discs can be professionally repaired with a disc repair machine, regardless of whether they have light surface marks or heavy circular scratches. The machines work by grinding away a very precise amount of the shiny side of your Xbox 360 disc. This will not damage your Xbox 360 game as your discs data layer is covered by a thick layer of polycarbonate.

Ironically, the shiny polycarbonate is intended to protect your discs data but when it becomes scratched it can actually prevent playback. Therefore by removing any scratches from this layer you also remove any obstacles blocking the laser from reading the data.

Polishing The Disc

Once enough of the polycarbonate layer has been removed your disc will be polished. This stage is very important as only grinding the disc, while typically addressing playback problems, leaves the disc looking in worse condition than it started, with heavy radial and/or sanding marks.

Some low cost disc repair solutions either clean or grind the disc, they rarely do both and when they do the results are often unimpressive. The calibre of machine needed to perform high quality disc repairs can cost hundreds, if not thousands of pounds to buy.

Lots of light scratches on a gamecube disc?

Any way to make it playable again? I start it, go to the title screen, and start playing the game, but it gets to the opening cutscene of the game, and it says error, read the gamecube manual. I don't want to spend money or go anywhere.

Usually I just wash off the disk and it works. If that doesn't work, I guess you're stuck getting a new game. After all, u cant play with a game that cant be read.

How to fix the red lights problems on Xbox 360

Those who have played or play Microsoft’s Xbox 360 will be familiar with the expression ‘red ring of death’. But for folks who do not recognize it, the ‘red ring of death’ means the four quarter-circle arcs on the face of the Xbox console which, when glowing red instead of green, suggest something is incorrect with the gamebox.  Each red arc indicates a different problem, so the ‘trouble’ could spell something like a simple one like an incorrect connection or a serious total hardware failure.

The common troubles and suggested actions

When the second arc blinks constantly, it means the box is overheating, so the best option is to stop playing, switch off the gamebox, unplug it from the power source and allow it to cool for a while.  The third arc indicates hardware failure, and the quick measure is to unplug and reinsert all connections but if the problem continues, see your repair center. When the AV cable is not connected well, the four lights will blink. Disconnect the cable and reinsert it until there is the audible ‘click’ . When three arcs blink simultaneously, you may have a general failure on hand and the repair center is your only option.

A general failure is typically boded by freezing screens, lines in the screen, graphics errors or problems with the audio. Only the power switch may function perfectly. Such errors may be caused by any or a few of the components, but it can mean likewise that not enough power is being received, either due to external power source fluctuations or the power cable being not perfectly attached to the system.

The problem of scratched discs as indicated by rings in the disc is another potential problem. Scratched discs were first noted in Europe in 2005, even if many deemed it only a small fault. However Microsoft was sued in 2007 in Florida for ‘negligent design and manufacture’ of the Xbox, while two other law firms in California and Washington also have filed class lawsuits for the same reason.

Probable causes and feasible solutions

One cause for general failure advanced by experts was failure of the solder joints. Due to an additional mass of chips that may have absorbed heat when soldering, the lead-free solder might not have properly melted; the solders are thus structurally weak. Extended use created sufficient heat that could melt the solders, allowing the mother board to warp and flex, unseating it.Some quick solutions include reseating the dislodged units or lowering the heat generated by switching to 65 nm, better done in a Xbox repair center.

The user also has some options to quick-fix the problem. Three flashing rings but green light on the power supply unit: no option except repair. Red power supply light that turns orange or goes out when the console is switched on, plug to another outlet. . This is to see if only the power is at fault. If the condition does not change, you may need to get a new power unit.

Scratched disc was the result of the console being moved while disc is running, incorrect placement of the disc in the tray, or faulty disc tray. Most often, it is the user who caused the problem.
