Do you think that home that we live in special to us just because we have it surrounded by few walls with paint on them? Do you know actually what makes the home feel like home? I have always advocated that it is the magic of the lights that we have installed in our houses which make up the whole mood when we enter our house. And it is true, the interior designers know this pint very well and that is why they say that it is not possible to lift up the mood of the room or the house unless and until you don't have the lights to compliment it. Indeed the lightning of the room has a very magical impact on the mood of the person in the room or the person who enters the room. Things are very different in the morning time when the room is lighted up with fresh sunlight; you get a much rejuvenated feeling at that time and when it is the time for evening and it's time to put on the lights then you get a very different feeling altogether because suddenly because of lightening the mood of the whole room and the person living in them changes. You seem to get a very warm feeling filling up your nerves and you feel like you just want to stay there forever.

So as we see that lights play a very important role in our lives when it comes to setting our mood, it can work wonders. There are many types of lights which the decorators prefer and use them widely over their projects so that they can fill in the missing gap of adding the touch up to the room or place they are fitted on. Light like wall lights and floor lamps altogether charm the entity they are fitted onto and things like this mean mood setters forever. We cannot imagine the world without lights since they form a very important part of our lives, though we are so busy and we never realize this fact but when it comes to power failure then we realize the true value of even a simple bulb in our house. But its fine because this is human nature and we never realize the value of something unless it is gone or it is not there.

How do you set up lighting so only the subject is lit & the background stays black (or in shadow)?

I'm trying to have someone's face pop out from the darkness, like in the examples from the links below:

I'm hoping to keep my subjects in color though. Is this completely possible with just a simple lighting set-up, or is there a need for Photoshop? Any lighting and/or background suggestions?

If you use a soft light close to your subject in a dark room, very little light will reach the background, so you won't see much/any detail there. As an alternative, you can set up a backdrop that absorbs light (like black velvet or suede) and can experiment with different lighting without having to worry about your background.

How to Fix a Light Timer Switches

Light timers are a great way to save energy. These timers have the tendency to control the operation of different electric appliances like lights, fans, or other electronic devices. They are extremely simple and flexible to use. Although many different types of timers are available in the market, but all of them mostly work under a same principle. You might at times feel difficulty in understanding the functions and operations of the timer, but manuals are there to guide you and it can be easy for you once you go through those manual guides.

Required Items

-    Light timer
-    Wall outlet
-    Light or other electronic device

Steps

Conventional Timers

1.    Directly connect the manual timer into the wall outlet. Usually a switch operates the outlet. If you have that switch make certain that is it on.

2.    Non-digital timers usually have a big dial that indicates the time. Adjust the current time by turning the dial. Note that different brand names may have different procedure for time adjustment.

3.    After adjusting the current time, set the preferred time for lights to turn on. Locate a colored plastic key on the slot, which is used to set the preferred time. Set nearest possible time that you want to set for your lights to turn on.

4.    Similarly adjust the time for lights to turn off. A colored plastic key is used on slot to set the turn off time for lights. Set your preferred time on the timer. Sometimes more than one keys are there to set multiple times for lights to turn on or off on the set time within same day.

5.    Connect the light to the timer and turn on the light. If the timer is working properly, the light will not turn on. This ensures that the timer will now control the turning on and off of the light and allow the light to turn on or off on set time.

Digital Timers

1.    Digital timers are simpler, easy and supple than conventional timers. It is suggested to read the instructions carefully given in the manual before setting digital timer. Digital timers have some special features to schedule weekly program.

2.    Open the menu and exactly set the time when you want to turn your light on. With digital timer you can set an exact time distinct from manual timer.

3.    Now set the off time in the same manner you did the on time.

4.    Many digital timers have the feature of setting a schedule. If your timer has one, set the weekly schedule for your lights. You can find the option in the same menu.

5.    In the end connect the time to plug and turn it on. Now onwards your timer will take care of turning your lights on and off.

Tips

-    Light timers are very helpful in many ways. It not only saves energy, but also of great help to prevent any theft in your absence. The only thing you need to do is to use digital timers in your different rooms with slight change in their set timings while going away from your home.
-    A timer with three-prong outlet is best option to avoid any damage to your timer in case you use powerful light bulbs. Timer with three-prong outlet is considerably heavy duty and able to hand more watts.
