Can I use a Minolta 35mm speedlight(external flash) for my digital Nikon d40?
I have an minolta old external flash for my 35mm minolta and I can place it on my nikon's hot shoe to make it work and flash when I click the shutter but I'm worried about it having to damage to my nikon. Can someone help me out?
Don't put an old 35mm manual flash on your hotshoe without checking the voltage. You can fry your camera. Modern DSLR's don't like trigger voltages over about 9-12V (depending on make/model), but old flashes from 35mm film cameras can have trigger voltages around 200V.
Either use it off camera with a wireless trigger (Cactus triggers can take highish voltages, RF-602's cannot) or buy a Wein SafeSync.
Edit: From checking the site 'insider' linked to, most of the Minolta flashes appear to be low voltage - you might be ok. If your model is not listed though, there is a given method for checking trigger voltage using a multimeter (link is at the top of the page).
