The Tabernacle for the iPad!

Every day I browse the internet looking for someone, anyone, who is creating high quality biblical art.  Time and time again I am disappointed to see that there simply is nothing new under the sun.  Oh sure, there are a few that have tried to create good images, but in the end they simply don't really understand that what they are doing is simply taking Christian art further in the tank.

I recently had the opportunity to go to a Christian retail convention where vendors try and get the bookstores to pick up their wares and put them on display.  I passed a vendor who had a booth that was selling, can you guess, Biblical art.  I absolutely had to stop and check it out.  I have to admit, the art caught my eye as I was walking past and I almost laughed out loud.  Now I'm not one to poke fun and I am not the type of person who will make someone feel bad by any stretch, but this was bad.  So bad that I needed to talk to someone who was working the booth just to get some perspective.  What I found to be amazing was how excited and enthusiastic they were about how "awesome" the art was.  I was polite and cordial to them and moved on, but it has stuck in my mind like a sore thumb and is really the inspiration behind this article.

Now, I do follow several artists, a couple are Christian, but most are secular.  Of the Christian ones that I do follow there is one that sticks out in my mind above all the other Christian artists.  Enter AnimMan Studios.  If you've never been to this site, now is the time.  What I love about this site is not only the high quality images, but the creativity behind everything that I see, from website design to the images themselves.  Now the site is a little shallow in the amount of product content, but every time they release something it is high quality.  The artist behind the site and spectacular images is Eric Bouchoc.  If you were to do a search on this guy, you would discover that he has actually been around for a while.

What I really want to mention is their latest product.  It is The Tabernacle for the iPad.  If you've ever seen the iPad you know the clarity of the screen and The Tabernacle on the iPad is nothing short of spectacular!  It is linear in its function, but from what I understand they are working on a free update that will simply blow your mind.  This product is by far worth the cost of $4.99 and it has all the images of The Tabernacle Book and more.  I'm telling you, these guys are good and I am very much looking forward to seeing what they come up with next.  So, what is on the horizon?  Well, call or email these guys and they will quickly tell you that what is coming is SO exciting.  They will also confirm to you that their passion for creating high quality biblical art is near and dear to their heart.  So again I ask, what is on the horizon?  Well...Solomon's Temple is supposed to be due out next followed closely by Noah's Ark and Creation.  I don't know about you, but the thought of seeing the images from these next projects...mind blowing.  If they are anywhere close to the quality of the Tabernacle projects...the future looks incredibly bright!

In the end...I highly recommend that you go over to the Apple store and pick up the iPad app.  If you do not yet have an iPad yet, I would seriously consider buying one.  Until then, at least go and pick up one of their Tabernacle Books.  You will be amazed and you will not be disappointed at all!  Then, keep checking back with their site as this next year will for sure prove to be an exciting year in this genera!

Looking for a Pet Portrait Studio / Tent to take pictures of my Bengal Cats.?

I am looking for a studio to buy and take pictures of our Bengal Kittens, something that I can set up and take pictures of my kittens that will allow me to show their beauty. I get disapointed in my pictures when I take them in the open with no real background, thank you for any help or direction you can give me.

You could start with something as simple as a carefully ironed bed sheet, gently draped over something and lit by some bounced light source and a reflector or two.
Learn how to use your camera for a shallow DOF, pay attention to your background and your props, and experiment with a few different settings and set ups.

What photographic gear to choose

Choosing your gear

So your starting out as a photographer, you hopefully have some clients lined up or at least interested. Whether you are a product or a portrait photographer you really need to make some important decisions in what gear to buy before you can even get out there and start earning money.

I started by looking at my camera body, my original body was not going to cut it so an upgrade was in order. With weeks of deliberation I decided to go for a good quality canon body but by no means the top of the line. I decided to keep money back for lenses.

With lenses it is a minefield, so many people have a great deal of advice but the best way for you to decide is to try them out for yourself. Whether you hire first of go in shop and try before you buy. One thing I did to save was get a macro lens that I could also use as a portrait lens. It was a prime lens so very sharp and helped me save by using it as a multipurpose lens. I also bought a high end zoom that allowed me to have a wide angle as well as middle range focal length. That way I had two lenses that potentially could have cost me 4 x the amount. It's not ideal but a good idea when first starting out. The lenses were a Sigma 50mm macro and a Canon L series 17-40mm.

From the setup above I can take wide angle landscapes, portraits, macro (products), still life, street candids and much more. It may not be perfect nut I can live with what I have until I have the cash to upgrade.

I currently mainly do portraits and product photography and needed another way to save on cash to be able to afford the right lighting when starting in the industry. There are many lighting setups available but in my option none as versatile as lasolite setups. I bought a large professional light tent with two constant lights with stands and reflector dishes and soft boxes for under £400. I then bought an additional soft box and flash head and stand. This enables me to shoot product photos and portraits with all the same equipment! The only addition was a backdrop.

Other additions once I started earning cash were a Light Meter and flash gun, remote trigger, battery grip, wired shutter release, a better bag, more batteries and memory cards and of course more software.

The reason I wrote this brief article was to really show anyone starting up in freelance photography is not cheap but doesn't have to cost you a fortune either! There will always be equipment you want and can't afford. Just keep yourself beyond your means and when you score that big contract you can treat yourself!
