Techniques of Lighting a Chroma Key Shot

Chroma Key photography refers to a kind of photography in which a photographer films a subject behind a blue or green color screen. After photographing the subject, the background screen is replaced by any other selected image. This is the process of Chroma Key or Green Screen. This technique requires a blend of creativity and technical knowledge. A photographer should equip himself with the knowledge of lighting techniques when using this kind of process.

While photographing the subject a camera person should light the background and the foreground subject completely. Good lighting in green screen photography results in emphatic photographs. A photographer can deploy around 250-watt halogen lights. A person can set these lights on either side of the screen. You can use ‘Back Light’ to light the background. There is a ‘Front Light’ to illuminate the background as well as the subject. You can use these lights to avoid any kind of shadows in a final photograph. If you do not light the foreground and the background subjects properly, it might result in the unnecessary shadows falling on the subject. However, a photographer should not light the foreground and the background with a lot of light. This also results in leaving unwanted glare on the photograph. It might happen if you use five thousand watt of light. This might distort the picture completely. You can deploy ‘Bounce Cards’ to eliminate the hot spots or glare that would normally occur from direct exposure. A person can also use ‘Butter Sheet’ to give a soft lighting effect on the subject. This will also give a natural glow and effect on the face of a subject. Too much of exposure to the light can cause color bleeding. For instance, if you use a green color screen behind the subject and too much of light might cause the green shade reflected onto the subject. One can avoid this by using a digital mixer after photographing the subject. However, it is a time consuming process. You can also fix this problem by lessening the amount of light. One can also use amber gels that can decrease the reflective properties of the green screen.

The advantage of taking care of lighting during the process of the green screen photography is that it results in distinctive and good photography.
