One of the most exciting and heart-wrenching epics ever made, THE SAND PEBBLES is a masterpiece of storytelling, with exceptional performances by a stellar cast. The complex tale begins simply enough in 1926 China, where a group of American soldiers are patrolling the Yangtze River on a gunboat called the San Pablo. The crew members, who call themselves Sand Pebbles, includes Jake Holman (Steve McQueen), a dispassionate but capable navy machinist, and his only friend, Frenchy (Richard Attenborough), a sailor in love with an English-educated Chinese girl, Maily (Marayat Andriane), who has been sold into prostitution. Strong feelings of nationalism have been sweeping through China, however, and when Chiang Kai-shek moves against the feudal warlords, the United States decides to treat the upheaval as a civil war, and the San Pablo is ordered to confine its function to protection of American civilians in the area. Included among them are Mr. Jameson (Larry Gates), a missionary, and Shirley Eckert (Candice Bergen), a schoolteacher with whom Jake falls in love. Soon Jake finds himself in the middle of an international military crisis when his native assistant, Po-han (Mako), is brutally tortured in an attempt to draw the San Pablo's fire, and the boat's inexperienced and prideful captain (Richard Crenna) wants to give his humiliated ship and disgraced crew a chance for glory. THE SAND PEBBLES--with its expert cinematography, moving score, and riveting locations--is a memorable viewing experience brought to life by the multitalented director Robert Wise.

Three generations of women struggle to make lives for themselves and their families in the desert wastes of Northern Brazil in a drama from filmmaker Andrucha Waddington. In 1910, Vasco de Sá (Ruy Guerra) leads his wife, urea (Fernanda Torres), and her mother, Dona Maria (Fernanda Montenegro), to their new home -- a ramshackle cabin in Maranhão, a tiny village in the middle of a barren sand dune. Vasco and urea's new neighbors are hardly welcoming of the new arrivals, especially Massu (Seu Jorge), and when Vasco unexpectedly dies, à urea and Dona Maria are left to fend for themselves, an especially vexing challenge as urea is with child. Nine years later, urea and Dona Maria have turned their cottage into a home, but life in Maranhão remains a constant uphill battle, and urea dreams of moving away with her daughter, Maria (Camilla Facundes). urea becomes infatuated with Luiz (Enrique Diaz), who works with a group of astronomers who have come to Maranhão to observe an eclipse, but their romance comes to a crashing halt when Dona Maria is killed. By 1942, Maria (now played by Fernanda Torres) is a promiscuous alcoholic who brings shame to urea (now played by Fernanda Montenegro). After the body of an Air Force pilot is found near Maranhão, a military officer is sent to investigate -- Luiz (now played by Stenio Garcia). When Luiz meets Maria, he sees the image of the woman he longed for years before, and while she doesn't have the same feelings for him, Maria realizes that Luiz represents her best hope of finally escaping the village she's come to hate. The House of Sand received its North American premiere at the 2005 Toronto Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi minimal usage of music in the film gives the stark landscapes a commanding presence.

Noted French filmmaker François Ozon directs this drama about personal loss and resilience. Marie (Charlotte Rampling) is deeply in love with her husband, Jean (Bruno Cremer). One day while vacationing at the seashore, Jean disappears into the ocean. A distraught Marie notifies the authorities, but sadly, they find no trace of her beloved husband. Later, back in Paris, Marie attends a dinner party hosted by her friend Amanda (Alexandra Stewart); over the course of dinner, it emerges that Marie and Jean had been married for 25 years. Marie speaks of Jean as if he were still alive, something that disturbs Amanda's fellow dinner guests, and after she is driven home by Vincent (Jacques Nolot), another guest, Marie sees Jean in her apartment and at breakfast the next morning. It quickly becomes apparent that Marie's imagination enables her to go along in life as if nothing happened to Jean, but as she slowly becomes involved with Vincent, she begins to cope with the fact that she is in fact living on her own. ~ Rebecca Flint Marx, All Movie Guide reflection of Marie's face in the mirror, audiences come to understand Marie's innermost thoughts and feelings. Peabody Award-winning filmmaker Paul Freedman directs this sobering documentary about the genocidal crisis in the Darfur region of Sudan. Freedman followed a group of African Union peacekeeping forces on a journey through the area, observing the 2.5 million people displaced from their homes by brutal violence, and forced to stay in the squalor of temporary camps. Analyzing the cultural, political, and historical background of the area, the film examines how the government in Sudan was able to turn so ruthlessly against its own indigenous people, creating what would most likely go down in history as one of humanity's most shameful moments. ~ Cammila Albertson, Rovi

Steve McQueen received his only Academy Award nomination for his performance in this epic-scale war drama, based on the novel by Richard McKenna. In 1926, as China teeters on the edge of political revolution in the midst of a civil war, the USS San Pablo, is ordered to patrol the Yangtze River to represent and protect American interests. While the San Pablo may be an American ship, much of the labor is actually performed by Chinese locals willing to work for American money, while stern but inexperienced commanding officer Captain Collins (Richard Crenna) frequently drills his charges, unsure what else to do. A machinist's mate with just under a decade of navy service behind him, Jake Holman (Steve McQueen) is assigned to the San Pablo and immediately makes enemies among the crew -- he prefers to do his own work rather than farm it out to others, and the one Chinese man who works by his side, Po Han (Mako), is treated as an apprentice rather than a servant. Holman also falls in love with an idealistic American missionary (Candice Bergen), while his shipmate Frenchy (Richard Attenborough) falls for a Chinese girl and - with marriage plans in mind - kidnaps her to prevent her from being auctioned off. As Holman's methods and attitudes continue to anger his comrades, they find themselves increasingly at odds with the Chinese, especially after Frenchy's girlfriend becomes pregnant and Po Han is captured by revolutionary forces and branded a traitor. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi Movie Guide riveting locations--is a memorable viewing experience brought to life by the multitalented director Robert Wise.

Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands for Wii Game Review

Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands is the latest in the Prince of Persia series to be released for the Nintendo Wii gaming console. Currently being developed by Ubisoft Quebec, it is unique in the sense that it is an inter-quel release, meaning it does not take place immediately after the last title that was released but somewhere in between previous releases.

While most video games tend to be released sequentially with the latest instalment following in time immediately after the last, The Forgotten Sands is a sequel to The Sands of Time and a prequel to Warrior Within.

Returning to the same storyline, The Forgotten Sands title picks up within the seven-year gap between the two titles, with the Prince discovering his brother's royal palace under siege from a powerful army hell-bent on destroying his brother's kingdom. In a last-ditch effort to save his brother's fate, the Prince chooses to embark on an epic adventure to search for and eventually wield the ancient power of the Sand.

Nintendo Power magazine reports the Wii version will revolve around a female genie seeking the Prince's help in order to free an enslaved kingdom from some sort of mysterious evil power. The Prince gets three new magical sand powers in the Wii version of The Forgotten Sands, a Sand Ring, pillar and protection sphere, all of which the Prince obtains through discovery of a magical phial.

The Sand Ring, functioning as a sort of wall grip, allows the Prince to climb areas with no grips or ledges. The pillar allows the Prince to climb higher, while the protection sphere protects him from falling and getting caught in traps.

These sand powers will aid the prince throughout navigation, combat, and puzzle-solving scenes. These powers eventually serve other purposes, such as activating other special powers.

As with all good Wii titles, The Forgotten Sands will take advantage of the Wii's specific platform abilities like the Wii Remote and Nunchuk.

During combat the Wii makes use of its motion-sensing capabilities. The player swings the Prince's sword by flicking the Wii Remote, while flicking the Nunchuk makes the Prince throw a punch. Other moves will simply use standard button presses, as the Ubisoft developers felt further use of motion controls would make the game tiresome and difficult. The Wii version will also feature a cooperative multi-player option.

The Forgotten Sands title is set to be released May 18, 2010 in North America and May 20 in Europe. The game's release is set to coincide with the May 2010 release of Disney's film adaptation of the game, even though the game is not a direct video game adaption of the movie nor does it contain any film elements.
