Will The Chevy Volt Really Get 230 Miles Per Gallon?
General Motors is trying to build momentum as it comes out of bankruptcy. The big news is it is claiming the Chevrolet Volt hybrid will get 230 miles per gallon in city driving. That is a simply staggering number, but is it accurate?
The Chevy Volt is being touted as an electric car. Given this, you might be wondering why there is any discussion of miles per gallon. More specific, gallons of what? Well, the truth is the car is a hybrid that is primarily an electric vehicle. The Volt will run on electricity from batteries until they go dead. Once they do, a small internal combustion engine will fire up and provide power to the wheels while also charging the batteries.
So, will the Volt really get 230 miles per gallon? No. There is a slight chance, but it is just that – slight. The 230 figure is derived from the fact the car is primarily electrical and not a classic hybrid like with a Prius or Honda Insight. The number is also the result of a controversial calculation be proposed at the EPA that determines miles per gallon in a hybrid in a skewed manor if the car runs more on the electrical motor than the internal combustion engine, exactly what we have here. To give you a feel for how odd this measurement is, the Volt is estimated to get over 230 miles per gallon in the city, but only just over 100 miles per gallon on the freeway.
So, has GM tried to pull a fast one on us? Well, let's just think of it as aggressive marketing. The funny thing is GM really didn't need to go this route. The fact the Volt will easily get well over 100 miles per gallon is more than enough to get plenty of people excited. There was no reason to push towards the 230 figure.
The Chevy Volt isn't due to hit the market until the latter quarter of 2010. This effectively means the car isn't remotely ready for the road in the middle of 2009. With a base price tag rumored to be in the $40,000 range, General Motors better get moving. It has a lot to prove!

Alternator or battery?
With the engine running I get 14.4 volts at the battery. But as soon as I turn on all the various electrical loads that voltage drops down to 11.8 volts. I've tried another battery and it's still the same so one could easily assume it's the alternator.
However, there's another bit I need to tell you. The alternator won't start charging until it's been over 3k rpm at least once. This is because the smaller "exciter" wire has a loose connection "internally". Does this wire tell the alt when there's increased demands on the battery?

With it's club-worthy beat, "I Feel Loved" is certainly the most danceable track on EXCITER, but its complex lyrical scheme and gnarly synth textures make it unlikely house party fodder. The harsh, bluesy tone of "The Dead of Night" harks back to "Your Own Personal Jesus," and finds David Gahan reveling in the kind of studied decadence that helped make the group's reputation, but the song is an anomaly. EXCITER offers a kinder, gentler, seemingly wiser Depeche Mode that's figured out how to grow up without growing old. |

West Greenwich Nissan dealer excited about delivery of first Leaf model
It seems fitting that the first Nissan Leaf to be delivered went to someone who lives in a city named after a tree, and a majestic tree at that. This month Olivier Chalouhi of Redwood City, California got his long-anticipated Leaf after being the first person in the United States to order the all-electric Nissan vehicle.
He was met with lots of fanfare after picking up his keys at a dealership in Petaluma. He drove his new black Nissan to a press conference in San Francisco, about 40 mile away, in a convoy made up of four other Leaf cars. Providence used car customer will want to follow the performance of the Leaf carefully to see if it is a match for their lifestyle.
Of course, however efficient the Leaf is, it couldn't avoid the city traffic and the conference was delayed for a few minutes waiting for the guest of honor (Would that be Chalouhi or the Leaf?) to arrive. Once he finally made it, a big production was made of plugging in the Leaf at city hall's public charging station. Speeches were then made all around, etc., etc.
Why the press event in San Francisco? Well, Nissan knew he could charge his car there. But seriously, the city is leading the way in promoting green vehicles by planning the installation of about 100 additional charging stations. What will this mean for the sales and production of electric cars in general? Well, that depends how many cities get on board, how many auto makers push to step up EV production and how many of us as consumers trust that we will be able to actually find a place to plug in our car so we can get back home.
Chalouhi isn't exactly your average commuter. (Maybe for the bay area, but certainly not New England.) He is the founder and chief technology officer of a company dealing in TV space and he commutes about 10 miles to work daily. Before the Leaf was delivered he made the trip on an electric bicycle.
He's had a 240-volt charging station put in his garage, but the family will keep another non-electric vehicle for longer trips. His wife's car, apparently. The affordable price of the Leaf, at $32,780 versus the Volt at $41,000, helped him decide which green car to buy.
