Bridal Gown Preservation: How to Keep your Dress in Perfect Condition

Your wedding is now a wonderful memory. And that bridal gown that you searched high and low for? Well, it's now the priciest piece of clothing hanging in your closet.

You may never wear that gown again, but are you ready to let it stand in the closet, with the stains of your reception setting in? Are you willing to hand it over to the moths to consume? Or are you interested in keeping your gown in perfect condition on the off-chance that you will want to wear it to renew your vows, use it to make christening gowns for your grandchildren, or let your daughter wear it on her trip down the aisle? If you answered yes to any of those options, you need to preserve your gown.

Find a Preservationist

Start thinking about preserving your dress even before you purchase it. Ask the bridal salon you visit for references. Ask friends and family members who they used. If they suggest you take it to the dry cleaner down the street, keep asking other people until you find a local specialist. Many places can clean your dress, but few can preserve it for future generations.

And do not wait too long after the wedding to get your dress preserved. The longer you wait, the more set in the stains become - especially mud and wine - two common offenders.

What is involved?

A preservationist will clean and package your gown with the future in mind. First, all stains will be removed. You may think you did not spill anything on your dress, but a quick look at most trains and hems reveals otherwise.

Some preservationist use a wet cleaning method that involves gently washing the gown by hand with gentle cleansers. This will remove simple stains, like champagne or cake. (If you do not remove this kind of stain, the fabric will eventually turn yellow.)

Other preservationists prefer a dry-cleaning treatment. They will pre-treat the stains and then dry clean the gown. This system involves the use of solvents or petroleum-based cleansers.

Once the gown is stain free, it is wrapped in acid-free tissue paper or unbleached muslin and packaged in an acid-free or pH-neutral box. Most boxes have a viewing window, which does not affect the preservation one way or the other.

After you pick up your gown, store the box in a neutral environment - one that is not too hot or too damp. A top closet shelf is probably a safe choice. A damp basement or a closet above the heating unit are poor choices.

Packing Other Mementos

Often brides want to package other items with their gowns - such as shoes, invitations, even jewelry worn that day. If that is the case, ask your preservationist for advice. It may be that the items are fine to include. Or, it may be that they should be packaged in acid-free envelopes to preserve them properly - and then tucked alongside the dress.

I Want to See It

Most preservationists agree that preserving the clean dress is the most important step. In most cases, the box does not have to be permanently sealed to keep out mice and insects. If that is the case, and you long to take a look at your dress years later, there are some steps to take. No, you do not have to wear white gloves, but you should wash your hands, as the oils on your skin could linger on the gown and cause yellowing in time.

What to Pay

The cost of preserving your gown should depend on the materials, the ornamentation of the dress and the stain damage. If someone gives you a flat price without asking about the materials or ornamentation, keep looking. You do not want an across-the-board preservation. You want one customized to your dress. Most people pay between $200 and $400, but costs can exceed that depending on the gown and location.

Do It Yourself

Your safest route is to get a professional to preserve your gown. If you are adamant that you can do it yourself, there are some tricks to the trade.

·        Do not keep your dress in plastic from the dry cleaners. Neither should you store it in the plastic bag that it came home in from the bridal salon. Plastic can cause permanent wrinkles and trap moisture, which encourages mildew to form.

·        Use white, acid-free tissue paper or unbleached muslin to pack your dress. Do not turn to ordinary tissue paper, as it contains acids, which could scar your gown.

·        Do not use colored tissue paper. If the box becomes wet, it could stain your gown. Red tissue paper is fine at Christmas, but makes for an ugly wedding dress.

·        Another trick is to wrap the gown in a white sheet or pre-washed unbleached muslin and placing it in a large, flat box under your bed. If you decide later to preserve your gown, you have done little harm.

The best advice is to include the cost of preserving your gown in your wedding budget. It may seem silly now, but it will not years later.

Perfect backdrop color for pre-school fall pictures?

I am looking to purchase either a seamless paper (most likely) and a muslin backdrop for fall picture I am taking of pre-schoolers. I am planning to order from either BHPhoto and other random companies. BH hasn't wronged me on paper backdrops, but I was wondering what's an ideal color for a backdrop? I know color backdrops come in solid colors (most do, that is), but the only problem I have with muslin is that I spend a ton of time steaming out wrinkles. I know they're made for that effect, but I go mad looking at them.

So, once again, what's a good color for a backdrop for fall? (doesn't necessarily have to follow the colors of fall) and if I should go with a particular muslin backdrop or stick with seamless paper?

Are the kids dressing however they want or following a dress code? If they get to chose what they are wearing it would be best to go with some thing nice but neutral so it doesn't clash with their clothing. If they are all going to wear similar colors or clothing you could try and find something that would go with the personality of the group or the season.
